FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Facial?

Facials are like little workouts for the skin, it’s a chance to exercise the muscles, improve circulation and flush out toxins with a goal to improving the appearance of the skin whilst you relax.

At Cosmetology Hub, Skin Clinic in Leicester, I ensure facials are tailored to your skin type, skin tone, particular skin concerns and goals. When people think of facials they think of cleanse and extraction but there is so much more a facial can do for you.

Whether you have acne, pigmentation signs of ageing, lifeless skin, a special occasion coming up a facial treatment can offer you many benefits including hydration, plumping, balanced complexion, radiance and much more!

Pick from Relaxing Spa Facials, HydraFacials, Skin Boosters, DMK Skin Peels, Anti ageing facials, Microdermabrasion, Mesotherapy, a selection of Multi Award Winning Products, and more.

What are the benefits of Facials?

At Cosmetology Hub in Leicester, I like to work on;

Stress reduction.

When our facial pressure points are massaged it can give us a feeling of relaxation and wellbeing. During facials there will be a process called lymphatic drainage massage which is known to flush out toxins and improve blood circulation.

Skin detoxification.

When our skin needs a detox it can feel congested, acne prone, dull and lifeless. A facial treatment is the perfect pick me up to deep cleanse, exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. To maintain youthful, polished and hydrated skin the cell turnover should regenerate every 28-30 days so monthly facials are the perfect self-care treatment.

Reduce congestion.

The extraction process is part of most facials and the most satisfying. During the facial there will be different modalities used to loosen blackheads/whiteheads such as enzyme exfoliation before using tools like the BT Micro ultrasonic device, HydraFacial and manual extractions to clear clogged pores. It helps improve the appearance of your skin tone.

Tighten your skin.

Over time, the elasticity of our skin reduces because collagen products start to decrease from our early 20’s. Although this is a sad fact, we can use facials to keep the skin younger for longer, stimulate natural collagen production, reduce fine lines and work on optimal skin health.

Even skin tone.

If you suffer with uneven skin tone, dark patches and dull skin you will benefit from regular facials to breakdown melanin production. Melanin production is a defence mechanism of our skin to protect itself so you will be advised on the correct skincare to use alongside pigmentation facials. Hormonal changes can worsen pigmentation so it’s important to use a tyrosinase inhibitor throughout your facial treatments.

Manage acne.

Frequent spots or Acne is a common skin concern which can be exacerbated by hormonal changes, medication, environment aggressions, air quality, excess oil production, the wrong skincare products and bacteria from pillow cases/phones/make-up brushes etc.
Should I expect a breakout?

Skin can go through ‘purging’ because facials help to eliminate toxins, and this can cause ‘breakouts’ whilst the skin is detoxing. Be patient for one skin cycle (about 28 days) and follow your aftercare advice. If you are acne prone, you will be advised to use an antimicrobial spray called Clinisept 3 times daily after your treatments to reduce the breakouts.

Can I still do facial hair removal alongside facials?
If you usually wax or thread your face you must leave a 1 week gap between facials and removing facial hair, if you are having laser hair removal you must leave a 2 week gap between having laser removal and have facials. If your skin is still irritated after any skin treatments refrain from any type of hair removal.

What should I experience after my Facial?
You will have a rosy glow; post treatment redness and extraction bumps can occur but usually subside within 24 hours. During your visit to the skin clinic I will prepare you well. Depending on your facial treatment, you may experience some flaking and dryness whilst your skin readjust, your skincare routine will aid this process.

How do I take care of my skin after my facial?

Do’s

  • Double cleanse
  • Change your pillowcases on a regular basis
  • Clean your make-up brushes or avoid them altogether
  • Clean your phone to avoid bacteria spreading
  • If you do breakout, use your Clinisept spray 3 times daily
  • Stay committed to your skincare routine and you will see results
  • Check in with your facialist if you are ever concerned about anything
  • Drink plenty of water after your treatment (6-8 glasses recommended)
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet including 5 portions of fruit and vegetables
  • Do your skincare routine including SPF daily
  • Exfoliate 1 week after your facial to increase benefits

Dont’s

  • Avoid wearing make-up for 24 hours
  • Do not change your skincare routine unless advised to
  • No exfoliation for 1-week post treatment- you will be given gentle daily enzymes to use
  • Avoid sun-bathing/sunbeds/fake tan for 2 weeks
  • Avoid direct heat /sauna/hot bath or shower/steam for 72 hours
  • Do not exercise for 24 hours post facial / 72 post peel
  • Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol
  • Do not apply perfume to the skin
  • Do not pick, pull or touch your skin – allow things to settle
Should I have a Facial before an event?
Yes! Be sure to leave a 1 week gap between your facial and special occasion as your skin will undergo some changes during this time.
Can I have a Facial during pregnancy?

There are pregnancy friendly facials, during your medical check let your facialist know if you are pregnant or suspect you may be so the treatment plan can be tailored for you. Avoid treatments such as microdermabrasion, skin peels and microneedling.
